Why Do Boxing Gloves Smell?
Boxing gloves smell because of sweat. Your hands sweat inside the glove, the lining and the foam soak it up, and the glove stays warm and closed. Bacteria then grow in that damp space and cause the smell. The padding is thick, so it can stay wet for a long time after you take the gloves off.
This is why the fix is mostly about moisture. You can clean the surface well and the glove will still smell if the inside never dries fully. Dry first, clean second.
The After-Training Routine (About Two Minutes)
Do this every time you train. It prevents most smell problems before they start.
- Take the gloves out of your bag as soon as you get home. Do not leave them in a closed gym bag overnight.
- Open the wrist strap or undo the laces fully and pull the opening wide.
- Wipe the inside with a dry cloth or a paper towel, including the thumb and knuckle area where sweat collects.
- Wipe the outside the same way.
- Stand the gloves up with the opening facing out, in a room with moving air.
- Leave them until they are completely dry, which can take a full day. Do not put them on a radiator or in direct sun.
If you train most days, this routine matters more than any weekly deep clean.
How to Clean the Inside of Boxing Gloves
The inside is where the smell lives, so be gentle and use as little water as you can. Wipe it with a cloth that is only slightly damp, with a very small amount of mild soap if needed. Then wipe it again with a clean cloth that is only slightly damp, to remove the soap. Finish with a dry cloth, then let the glove air dry open.
Do not pour water into the glove or push a wet cloth deep into the padding. If the foam gets soaked, it will take much longer to dry and can lose its shape. If you cannot reach the far end of the glove, use a cloth wrapped around a wooden spoon handle or a similar long, blunt tool.
How to Clean the Outside, by Material

The outside needs less work than the inside, but the right method depends on what the glove is made of. Care needs differ between materials, so treat this as general advice and test any new method on a small hidden area first. You can find the material on the product page or the glove label.
|
Material |
How to clean it |
What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
|
Genuine leather |
Wipe with a slightly damp cloth, then dry it straight away. Condition it lightly now and then if it feels dry |
Soaking, heat and strong chemicals, which can dry out and crack the leather |
|
Faux leather |
Wipe with a slightly damp cloth and a drop of mild soap, then dry it |
Alcohol, bleach and heat, which can damage the surface coating |
|
Synthetic leather |
Wipe with a slightly damp cloth and a drop of mild soap, then dry it |
Alcohol, bleach, hot water and hard scrubbing |
Clean the strap and the stitching too. Sweat and dirt collect there.
How to Get Rid of the Smell
If the glove already smells, start with the basics. Clean the inside as above and dry it fully. Then try one of these, from gentlest to strongest.
- Air them out in a well-ventilated room for a full day or two.
- Loosely fill each glove with a dry paper towel and change the paper when it feels damp. It soaks up moisture from inside the foam.
- Lightly mist the inside with a mix of one part white vinegar to two parts water, then air-dry the glove completely. Test it on a hidden spot first, because vinegar is acidic.
- Sprinkle a little baking soda inside a glove that is already dry, leave it overnight, then tip it out and wipe the inside.
Do not use heavy perfume sprays or air fresheners. They cover the smell for a short time and then mix with it. Freezing gloves is a popular idea, but it does not remove sweat, so do not rely on it.
If a glove still smells strongly after a thorough clean and a full day of drying, the foam may be holding too much old sweat. At that point, a replacement pair may be the better answer.
What Not to Do
Most damage to gloves comes from trying to clean them too hard. Avoid these.
- The washing machine. It soaks the foam, can warp the shape, and can damage the shell and the stitching.
- Soaking or holding them under a tap. Water gets deep into the padding and may never fully dry out.
- A hairdryer, a radiator, a tumble dryer or direct sun. Heat can crack genuine leather and damage the coating on faux and synthetic leather.
- Alcohol, bleach or strong cleaning sprays. They can dry out leather and break down the surface of faux and synthetic leather.
- A closed gym bag or a car boot. Warm, closed spaces keep gloves damp.
Is It Okay to Wash Boxing Gloves?
You can clean them with a slightly damp cloth, but you should not wash them in the way you wash clothes. The padding is thick and cannot be wrung out, so any water that gets inside stays there. If you want to wash something, wash your hand wraps, not the gloves.
How Often Should You Clean Boxing Gloves?
|
When |
What to do |
|---|---|
|
After every session |
Wipe inside and out, open the glove and air dry it |
|
Once a week |
Wipe with a slightly damp cloth and a drop of mild soap, then dry fully |
|
When it smells |
Air out for a day or two, then try paper towel or diluted vinegar |
|
Every few weeks |
Check the strap, the stitching and the padding for wear |
Hand Wraps and Clean Hands
Most of the sweat that reaches your gloves starts at your hands. A clean pair of hand wraps catches part of it before it gets into the lining. Use a fresh pair for every session, and wash your wraps after use. Check the label on the wraps for the washing instructions. Our inner gloves and hand wraps include boxing bandages in 2.5m, 3.5m and 4.5m lengths.
If your hands smell after training, wash them with soap and dry them fully, and make sure your wraps are clean and dry before you wrap again. A smell that stays on your hands can come from damp wraps or damp gloves, so fix those first.
Storage and Rotation

How you store your gloves matters as much as how you clean them. Store them in a well-ventilated room, with the openings facing out. If you have to carry them in a gym bag, take them out as soon as you arrive and let them dry before you pack them again. Do not store them in a sealed plastic bag.
Rotation helps a lot if you train often. Gloves often need a full day to dry, so wearing the same pair every day may not give them that time. Two pairs let one dry while you use the other. It is also a good way to keep a separate pair for sparring or for the bag. Our training gloves use dual-density foam, with a denser inner layer and a softer outer layer, and are a good second pair for bag and pad work.
How Long Do Boxing Gloves Last?
There is no fixed lifespan. A pair lasts longer if you train less often, hit lighter, dry them fully after every session and rotate pairs. Gloves used hard several times a week wear out faster. Use the signs below and not a date.
When Should You Replace Boxing Gloves?
Replace your gloves when any of these happen. The padding feels flat, lumpy or hard, and you can feel the bag through the glove. The shell is cracked, peeling or split. The stitching is coming apart. The strap no longer holds your wrist firmly. The smell comes back quickly after a proper clean and a full dry. Your hands or knuckles hurt after sessions that did not hurt before.
Worn padding is a safety problem, not just a comfort problem. It protects your hands, and it protects your training partner if you spar. When you choose your next pair, use our boxing glove weights guide to pick the right oz for your training.

How often should you clean boxing gloves?
Wipe and air-dry them after every session, and clean them with a damp cloth once a week. If they smell, air them out for a day or two before trying anything stronger.
Can I dry boxing gloves with a hairdryer?
No. Heat can crack genuine leather and damage the coating on faux and synthetic leather. Use moving air and time. A room with a fan or an open window works better.
How long do boxing gloves last?
There is no fixed lifespan. It depends on how often you train, how hard you hit and how well you dry them. Replace them when the padding goes flat, the shell cracks or the strap no longer holds.
Do you clean genuine, faux and synthetic leather gloves in the same way?
The basic routine is the same: wipe, dry and air out. The difference is care. Avoid heat and strong chemicals on all of them, and condition genuine leather lightly now and then. Test any new method on a small hidden area first.
