Sparring gloves carry more foam padding across the knuckles and the back of the hand, spreading impact absorption so your partner takes less of it. Most training gloves sit between the two and handle both, which is why they suit anyone doing a mix of bag, focus pads and light sparring. Nearly all pairs fasten with a hook and loop closure for a quick, secure fit, whilst competition gloves use a lace-up design for a tighter wrap that someone else ties for you.

Choosing the Right Boxing Glove Size

Boxing gloves are sized in ounces, and the number refers to the padding rather than your hand size. The range runs 8oz, 10oz, 12oz, 14oz and 16oz, all made for both men and women. Lighter weights at 8oz and 10oz favour speed and pad drills. Heavier weights at 14oz and 16oz add padding and wrist support for sparring or long rounds on the punch bag. Most adults doing general training settle on 12oz or 14oz, which covers bags, pads and light sparring without a second pair. Wear hand wraps underneath whatever you choose. They come in 2.5m, 3.5m and 4.5m, and they add knuckle protection the glove alone doesn't cover.

What's the difference between sparring gloves and training gloves?
